Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner has been Head of the German Institute for Development Policy and Co-Director of the Center for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2003. As a specialist in global governance, network theories, and international relations and cooperation, he does research, consults, and travels around the world to confront the long-established pessimism that sees us as selfish beings fighting only for our personal benefit with a new image: Humankind as always having cooperated and whose basic need for fairness, trust and belonging should now be raised to a global level.

The director Jörg Lukas Matthaei asked himself whether the new wave of zombies in film and television in the past few years serves as a deterrent – or as a script for happily reaching the future.

Together with the visitors they examine on which side we want to stand. This might come as a shock even for steady nerves: We can still come back.

Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner ist seit 2003 Direktor des Deutschen Instituts für Entwicklungspolitik sowie Co-Direktor des Center for Global Cooperation Research der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Als Spezialist für Global Governance, Netzwerk-Theorien sowie Internationale Beziehungen und Kooperationen forscht, berät und bereist er die Welt, um dem alten Pessimismus, der uns als egoistische Wesen sieht, die nur für den eigenen Vorteil kämpfen, endlich ein neues Bild entgegenzuhalten: Der Mensch als immer schon kooperierendes Wesen, dessen grundlegende Bedürfnisse nach Fairness, Vertrauen und Zugehörigkeit nun auf eine globale Ebene gehoben werden sollten.

Der Regisseur Jörg Lukas Matthaei fragt sich, ob die New Wave von Zombies in Film und Fernsehen der letzten Jahre uns dafür zur Abschreckung dient — oder als Skript fürs glückliche Erreichen der Zukunft.
